Upright vs Grand: Maintenance Differences
The two designs age differently and need different attention.
A grand action works with gravity and includes a repetition lever, so it holds regulation longer but is more sensitive when it drifts.
Upright actions rely on springs and tapes; those tapes perish with age and are a common cause of notes that fail to return.
Grand lids and rims collect dust that eventually reaches the soundboard; uprights hide dust behind the lower panel where mice occasionally nest.
Regulation intervals differ: a home grand benefits from full regulation roughly every ten years, an upright somewhat less often.
